Happy Nutrition Month everyone! March is the time of year when we focus on making healthy choices and taking care of our bodies through good nutrition. But have you ever wondered how Nutrition Month came to be? Well, let me take you on a journey through time to uncover the history of this annual event.

The History of Nutrition Month

The idea of dedicating a month to nutrition education began in 1973 in the United States, where it was called National Nutrition Month. The initiative was started by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, a professional organization of registered dietitians and nutritionists. Their goal was to raise awareness about the importance of good nutrition and help people make informed food choices.

The first National Nutrition Month was a huge success, and it quickly gained popularity across the country. Soon, other countries like Canada began to adopt the idea, and in 1980, the first Nutrition Month was celebrated in Canada. Today, Nutrition Month is celebrated in many countries around the world, including Australia, Brazil, and the United Kingdom.

So, what's the point of Nutrition Month?

The goal is to help people learn about healthy eating habits and make positive changes in their diets. Each year, Nutrition Month has a different theme, which focuses on a specific aspect of nutrition. For example, the theme for 2022 was "Discover the Power of Plant Protein," which encouraged people to explore plant-based sources of protein.

Nutrition Month isn't just about education, though. It's also a time to celebrate healthy eating and have fun with food. Many communities hold events like cooking workshops, farmers' markets, and healthy recipe contests. Schools often get involved by hosting nutrition-themed activities and providing healthy snacks for students.

Make every month "Nutrition Month"

While March is the official time to celebrate good nutrition, practice great nutrition habits every month. Here are some tips to get started:

  1. Focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods:

Try to eat foods that are as close to their natural state as possible. This means choosing whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Avoid processed foods and foods high in added sugars and unhealthy fats.

  2. Try new recipes:

Experiment with new recipes and ingredients to keep your meals interesting and nutritious. Look for recipes that include a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.

  3. Cook at home more often:

Cooking at home allows you to control the ingredients and portion sizes in your meals. Plus, it's often more affordable than eating out. Try to cook at least a few meals at home each week.

  4. Practice mindful eating:

Pay attention to your body's hunger and fullness cues and eat slowly and mindfully. This can help you enjoy your food more and avoid overeating.

  5. Stay hydrated:

Drinking enough water is essential for good health. Aim to drink at least 8 cups of water per day, and avoid sugary drinks like soda and juice.

  6. Get active:

Exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Aim to get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.

  7. Get support:

Surround yourself with people who support your healthy habits. Join a healthy eating or exercise group, or work with a registered dietitian or personal trainer to help you achieve your goals.

By practicing these healthy habits, you can make positive changes in your diet and lifestyle that will benefit your health for years to come. So, this National Nutrition Month, and next, commit to taking action and making your health a priority.
